Temu, Shein, AliExpress or a local shop?
Reviewed 3 November 2026 by Yiwu Market Australia
Those marketplaces can be cheap, and overseas businesses selling to Australians must still meet the consumer guarantees. The differences are in practice: delivery mostly comes from overseas, returns run through the platform or seller, and problems are usually easier to fix with a local retailer. CHOICE has also reported failures in safety tests of toys bought from online marketplaces, so take extra care buying for young children, wherever you buy. We are a local shop, so we have an interest in this question.
Where it comes from, and how long it takes
ShopBack's October 2026 comparison says Temu ships from overseas fulfilment centres with some stock in local warehouses, Shein from overseas warehouses, and AliExpress sellers mostly from overseas, with some listings in local or regional warehouses. It gives no fixed delivery times, because estimates change, so read the estimate at checkout before you rely on it for Christmas.
At Yiwu Market Australia, stocked items are dispatched from Melbourne within 2 business days of payment, and metro delivery is estimated at 2 to 6 business days from dispatch. We deliver retail orders only within Greater Melbourne for now, so we are not an option if you live elsewhere.
Returns and your rights
According to ShopBack, Temu and Shein run returns through their own platforms, with some Shein categories such as swimwear and underwear excluded, while on AliExpress it depends on the seller, with buyer-protection disputes as a fallback.
The same article cites the ACCC in saying overseas businesses selling to Australians must meet the consumer guarantees, and that resolving a problem is usually easier with a local retailer. Our own terms are on our returns page: faults are refunded or replaced with delivery refunded, and change-of-mind returns have a 3-day window and a $9.95 fee.
What the safety tests found
CHOICE reports that in December 2025, six of 22 toys for children aged three and under, bought from Amazon, eBay, Temu and AliExpress, had serious failures that could cause choking. In November 2025, 17 of 24 toys bought from Shein, AliExpress, eBay and Amazon failed button and coin battery standards. In May 2024, all 15 battery-operated toys it bought from Temu failed at least one requirement of the mandatory button battery standard.
These tests did not include this shop, and we are not claiming our products would do better. Cheap imported toys carry the same questions wherever they are sold. Read our guide to small parts and button batteries, check the age advice, and ask a seller if it is not there.
How to decide
If you have no deadline and the item is simple, an overseas marketplace may suit you. If you need it by a date, it is for a young child, or you want an Australian business to deal with if it goes wrong, it is worth checking a local shop, and comparing the total including delivery, not just the sticker price.
Common questions
- Do Australian consumer guarantees apply to Temu, Shein and AliExpress?
- ShopBack, citing the ACCC, says overseas businesses selling to Australians must still meet the consumer guarantees, though resolving a problem is usually easier with a local retailer. See the ACCC for your rights in full.
- Are toys from online marketplaces safe?
- CHOICE has reported serious failures in tests of toys bought from several online marketplaces. Take particular care with toys for children under three and anything with a button battery, wherever you buy.
- Is a local shop always dearer?
- Not always. Compare the total including delivery. Prices change, so we make no claim about what other shops charge.
