What is Yiwu Market? A plain guide for Australians

Reviewed 2 November 2026 by Yiwu Market Australia

Yiwu Market usually means Yiwu International Trade City, a huge permanent wholesale market in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, China. It is generally described as the world's largest wholesale market for small goods, with more than 75,000 booths selling things like Christmas decorations, toys, stationery, homewares and jewellery. It sells mostly in bulk to traders, and most of what it sells is exported.

Where it is and how big it is

Yiwu is a city in central Zhejiang province, south of Hangzhou. The market is split into numbered districts, each several storeys high. Sources give different totals because the market keeps growing and they were written at different times: figures of 75,000 to 80,000 booths are common, and the area is given as 5.5 to 6.4 million square metres.

Its roots go back to the 1980s, when the local government built a formal market for street traders. The first district of the present complex opened in the early 2000s.

What is sold there

Small, everyday manufactured goods: Christmas and seasonal decorations, toys, stationery, kitchen and household items, hair accessories, jewellery, hardware and gift lines. A traveller's guide cited below puts the range at over 2 million kinds of product.

Much of it is sold by the carton to wholesalers and importers rather than one piece at a time.

How Australians can buy from it

There are three usual ways. You can travel there, usually with a local buying agent, and arrange your own freight and customs. You can buy online from a trader in China and take on the same freight, customs and returns questions from a distance. Or you can buy from an importer who has already done that work and holds the stock here.

Yiwu Market Australia is the third kind. We are the importer of record, and our prices are landed prices, so a shopper pays no customs duty, import GST or brokerage on top. Shoppers can buy one item at a time from our shop, and trade buyers can buy in bulk through the wholesale side.
