Questions
How many baubles do I need for a 6 foot Christmas tree?
About 59 to 89 standard baubles for a 6 foot (180 cm) tree, using the published rate of 10 to 15 per foot. Larger baubles fill more space, so you need fewer.
How many lights do I need for a 7 foot Christmas tree?
About 700 mini lights for a 7 foot (210 cm) tree, at the usual 100 per foot. Decorators give 75 per foot for a light look and 125 for a full one.
How much garland do I need for a Christmas tree?
About 9 metres for every metre of tree, so 16 metres for a 180 cm tree. A slim tree takes less.
How accurate is this?
It is a starting point. The rates are rules of thumb that use only height, and a wide tree takes more than a slim one of the same height.
Where the rates come from
- Mahoney's Garden Center: Christmas tree decorating by the numbers: 75 to 125 lights per foot.
- Christmas Central: How to decorate your Christmas tree: 10 to 15 ornaments per foot under 9 feet, 12 to 20 above it, and about 9 feet of garland per foot.
- SAS blog: The length of the string of lights you need: why height-only rules are rough: they ignore how wide the tree is.
